Explanation by MIT Sloan experts

Think of it as a high-tech treasure hunt. The award is up to $16,500 and it goes to the first person or group of people who determine the whereabouts of up to five knights we’ve placed in public parks throughout Great Britain. Three of the knights are real – actual people dressed in shining armor – but two of them are of the cyber variety, represented by photographs that can be seen on Google Maps or Google Earth.

It may sound silly, but this is not a game; it is an experiment in time-critical social mobilization. That is, our objective is to understand more about the different ways in which large, geographically diverse teams use social media networks to organize and solve problems rapidly.

The inspiration for our grand experiment came from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon’s research outfit (Red Balloon challenge)...

Olivia Lum of Hyflux named Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011

First woman to win the award in 11th year of the competition

Monte Carlo, 5 June 2011 – Olivia Lum, Group CEO and president of Hyflux Limited, from Singapore, was last night named the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011 at an awards ceremony held in Monte Carlo's Salle des Etoiles. Olivia was picked from among the 49 country finalists vying for the title, each of whom had already been named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year in their home countries. This year saw more female finalists - six in total - than ever before.

Olivia founded Hyflux in 1989 with two staff and start-up capital of $US15,000. Today, Hyflux has become one of the world's leading desalination suppliers. The winner of the world’s first MBA contest for management innovation was announced last week. The competition, the HCL MBA M-Prize, was organized by the Management Information Exchange (MIX), an open innovation platform seeking to “crowd-source the future of management.” It relies on idea-challenges called “M-Prizes” to stimulate contributions from their community of management practitioners.

In this competition, with 114 teams competing from business schools around the world, the winning team was from Harvard Business School. The team won an opportunity to implement their business idea at HCL, a real-life $3.1 billion IT global services company, with $50,000 to fund the initiative...

GBSN Congratulates MBA Video Challenge Winners - Haas School of Business

29 April 2011, GBSN’s MBA Challenge Winner Announced!

The first MBA Video Challenge drew to a close earlier this month and the selection committee had the difficult job of choosing a winner from nine fantastic submissions. GBSN was pleased to receive videos from Haas, IMD, MIT Sloan, Thunderbird, UDD, Tuck and Strathmore which highlighted the innovative work of MBA students in Brazil, Chile, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Mongolia, Panama, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Projects included the development of new technologies, the creation of new growth strategies, the provision of technical assistance, and the identification of new income-generating projects.

And the winner is… the eight students of Haas School of Business (USA) led by Hrishika Vuppala! These eight students spent one year working with Community Markets for Conservation (COMACO) and the Wildlife Conservation Society to produce an independent organizational audit, a three-year strategic plan, and a geographic expansion strategy. COMACO provides a market-based solution to wildlife conservation by combating food insecurity through the creation of markets for rural farmers who might otherwise practice destructive land use or poach wildlife.

The Haas team identified and recommended the investments necessary to overcome historical difficulties, act more swiftly in the pursuit of opportunity, and shift from tactical considerations to concerted strategic maneuvers. By doing so, COMACO is better positioned to reach profitability in a sustainable manner and achieve long- term success.

UCD Smurfit Graduate Business School (Dublin) - MBA Rugby World Champions

THE UCD (University College Dublin) Smurfit School were recently crowned MBA rugby world champions after winning a bruising tournament in America.

The team captained by Robert Downes and coached by Barry Gibney cut a swathe through several American universities and one English one to take the title.

They beat their hosts Duke (22-12), the University of Texas (35-12), UCLA Cal state (22-7) before holding off Wharton (17-14) in a hard fought quarter-final, literally as two Smurfit players required hospital treatment, while the Pennsylvania team also had two players receive a red card.

Tight encounters were to become a feature of the knock-out stages as the Dublin college edged past the London Business School 12-8, claiming victory with a last-minute try.

The final, against Harvard, was another nail biting affair with UCD Smurfit holding out following a series of five-metres scrums to prevail 13-10.

It was definitely a thoroughly merited and hard-earned success following 320 minutes of uncompromising rugby over three days. Seapoint’s Stephen Verso was the only member of the squad who regularly plays AIL rugby...

2011 EFMD Excellence in Practice Awards - Submit Cases Now

The EFMD Excellence in Practice Awards attract case studies showcasing outstanding Learning and Development (L&D) partnerships. Fields might include Leadership, Professional, Talent or Organization Development and the programme described in the case should be deployed by an organisation either together with its in-house L&D unit or with an external L&D provider (Business School, Exec Education Center, etc...).

Case-studies must demonstrate Operational Excellence (e.g. sustainable partnership & effective learning environment etc.); Excellent Programme Management (e.g. design, delivery, evaluation, selection methodology of participants etc.); and above all Strong Business Impact (e.g. alignment with corporate strategy, impact for company, incorporation in corporate HR processes etc.).
