Mutual fund managers can outperform the market by picking stocks or timing the market successfully. Previous work has estimated picking and timing skill, assuming that each manager is endowed with a fixed amount of each and found some evidence of picking skills and little evidence of timing skills among successful managers. This paper estimates skill separately in booms and recessions and finds that the extent to which managers focus on stock picking or market timing fluctuates with the state of the economy. Stock picking is more prevalent in booms, while market timing dominates in recessions. We use this finding to develop a new methodology for detecting managerial skill. The results suggest that some but not all managers have skill. We describe the characteristics of the skilled managers and show that skilled managers significantly outperform the market.

Vulnerable populations use larger food portions to increase social standing

Consumers may attempt to compensate for their perceived lower status by showing others that they can afford to buy larger sizes of food.

Researchers from the French business school École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Paris and Northwestern University in Illinois conducted several experiments to see why people of lower social standings made poor health decisions by selecting larger food portions.

..."Understanding and monitoring the size-to-status relationship of food options within an assortment is an important tool at the disposal of policymakers to effectively fight against overconsumption," the authors wrote.

But this study finds that MBA students who go to schools where the research level is high get paid more than peers who went to other schools — as much as 21 percent more after three years in the real world.

The reason has less to do with the research itself than with the effort that goes into it. “Active engagement in knowledge creation through research,” write the authors, “as opposed to simply teaching from textbooks...may help faculty hone their analytical skills and consequently emphasize a more rigorous approach to problem solving.”...

 

MIT Unravels the Secrets Behind Collective Intelligence – Hint: IQ Not So Important

When it comes to a successful group, the easiest way to ensure victory may be placing women on the team. MIT’s Center for Collective Intelligence seeks to understand how humans get better (or worse) at solving problems as they work together. They studied hundreds of people working in small groups and found that they could determine a “C factor”, a key statistic that would predict if a group could perform well in a variety of tasks.

... Surprisingly, many common sense variables like group cohesion, motivation, and satisfaction simply didn’t seem to matter much. Instead, MIT determined that groups with a high C factor were mostly defined by:

• the high average social sensitivity of group members
• a high rate of sharing who gets to communicate
• more females

Professors John Beshears(Stanford)+ Katherine Milkman(Wharton): When They Are Wrong, Analysts May Dig in Their Heels

Beshears and Katherine L. Milkman of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania looked at how so-called "escalation bias" affects analysts' forecasts. Their paper, "Do Sell-Side Stock Analysts Exhibit Escalation of Commitment?" (PDF, 39 pages) was published in March by the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.

Beshears and Milkman studied the Institutional Brokers' Estimate System I/B/E/S database with more than 6,200 analysts' quarterly forecasts on about 3,500 companies over more than 18 years, from 1990 to 2008.

Among their specific findings:

• As analysts got more and more extreme, or "out-of-consensus," they became less and less responsive to the new earnings information when revising their full-year forecasts. 
• Stubbornness hurts forecasting accuracy. Revised full-year forecasts from extreme incorrect analysts were further off the mark from actual earnings than they would have been had the analysts' updating behavior been like the behavior of analysts who started at the consensus point.
• Analysts are punished for stubbornness. The more extreme, incorrect, and stubborn an analyst was, the less likely that he or she would rank among Institutional Investor magazine's "All-American" list of top analysts. 

World Investment Report 2011 - United Nations Conference

Global foreign direct investment (FDI) has not yet bounced back to pre-crisis levels, though some regions show better recovery than others. The reason is not financing constraints, but perceived risks and regulatory uncertainty in a fragile world economy.

The World Investment Report 2011 (PDF, 251 pages) forecasts that, barring any economic shocks, FDI flows will recover to pre-crisis levels over the next two years. The challenge for the development community is to make this anticipated investment have greater impact on our efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

In 2010 – for the first time – developing economies absorbed close to half of global FDI inflows. They also generated record levels of FDI outflows, much of it directed to other countries in the South. This further demonstrates the growing importance of developing economies to the world economy, and of South-South cooperation and investment for sustainable development.

Increasingly, transnational corporations are engaging with developing and transition economies through a broadening array of production and investment models, such as contract manufacturing and farming, service outsourcing, franchising and licensing. These relatively new phenomena present opportunities for developing and transition economies to deepen their integration into the rapidly evolving global economy, to strengthen the potential of their home-grown productive capacity, and to improve their international competitiveness.

Unlocking the full potential of these new developments will depend on wise policymaking and institution building by governments and international organizations. Entrepreneurs and businesses in developing and transition economies need frameworks in which they can benefit fully from integrated international production and trade. I commend this report, with its wealth of research and analysis, to policymakers and businesses pursuing development success in a fast-changing world.

Executive Summary

The financial and economic crisis has heightened everyone’s awareness of systemic risk. Confidence in the ability of decision-makers, policymakers and institutions to handle such risks has been shattered. Psychology, a culture of destructive self-interest, and social processes have also been invoked as part of a complex set of conditions that led to the debacle. In turn, the crisis has accelerated some prevailing demographic, economic, and social trends, including population aging, political tensions, geopolitical instability and environmental degradation, as the focus of attention has unavoidably shifted towards short-term, immediate concerns. The crisis has placed the issue of systemic risk at the top of the global agenda, forcing analysts and policymakers to make a stark distinction between what is important and what is actually urgent.

In this white paper we provide an overview of the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to the problem of risk, focusing on economic and financial aspects, while also paying attention to political, social and environmental risks associated with the crisis and its aftermath. The analysis represents the outcome of a collective, multi-disciplinary effort at understanding risk by a group of more than 30 scholars and policymakers from around the world who gathered in Philadelphia for a two-day conference.

The analysis begins with the conventional explanations of the crisis, further adding political considerations, institutional constraints, psychology, and social processes. This prepares the stage for the assessment of the effectiveness of policy interventions during the crisis which, while averting a massive meltdown, generated a number of additional problems, both short-term and long-term. Failures in global governance and in understanding complex ripple effects are also explored. Risks building up in emerging economies—from financial to political and demographic—are presented as a stark reminder that global instability is punctuated by a growing number of troubled hot spots.

The conference participants identified four action items. First, global governance needs to be enhanced, a task that is not easy as a changing of the guard takes place due to the ascendancy of the emerging economies. Second, regulation must both set parameters for self-regulation and establish a set of cushions, bells and whistles to ameliorate the possibility of further systemic crises. Third, policymakers and scholars ought to adopt a more humble attitude in terms of the extent to which they are able to understand and overcome the complexities posed by crises. And fourth, as people adopt shorter time horizons due to incentives, demographics, politics, and cognitive biases, it is important to remain on the alert for the weaknesses and faults in the global economic, political, and social architecture.

While there is a lot of research into what motivates people to work harder, there is little information about what drives people to sabotage their bosses. That's the mystery that David I. Levine, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business (Haas Full-Time MBA Profile), and co-author Gary Charness, an economics professor at UC, Santa Barbara, wanted to solve. To tap into the wisdom of Bay Area office workers, the team canvassed train commuters during rush hour about work behavior. They found that when employees retaliate against managers, it's not necessarily a bad thing, says Levine.

The kind of revenge taken is what matters to people. For example, if a misbehaving boss needs a file to complete a job and an employee knows where it is, people prefer that the employee simply refrain from divulging its whereabouts, rather than actually hide it from the boss. While passive resistance is deemed acceptable, active revenge bothers people, says Levine...

Research into sleep deprivation has revealed that insufficient rest can lead to deviant behaviour in the workplace, ranging from turning up late and going home early to rudeness, theft, vandalism and even violence.

The WEF study highlighted eight different key growth strategies for early-stage companies.

In a matter of only 18 months, this group oversaw 70 executive case studies from 22 countries, 110 surveys from 17 different countries and the analysis of revenue and headcount data for over 380,000 companies.

EU Consultation: Green Paper on a Common Strategic Framework for future EU Research and Innovation Funding

On 9th February 2011, the European Commission presented a Green Paper ( Green Paper EN 70 KB ) which proposes major changes to EU research and innovation funding to make participation easier, increase scientific and economic impact and provide better value for money. The changes, to be introduced in the next EU budget after 2013, would bring together the current Framework Programme for research, the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.

The Commission is seeking the views of all interested individuals and organisations on these proposed changes and on the specific questions set out in the Green Paper. The deadline for contributions is Friday 20 May 2011.

The federal government wants to get out of the mortgage business. But new research by assistant professor Manuel Adelino suggests such a move would only hurt the housing market.

In the boom before the bust, credit was easy and home values appeared bound for the stratosphere. Many analysts assumed the two were in a symbiotic relationship—that credit availability led to rising real estate prices, which then led to further credit availability. Tuck assistant professor Manuel Adelino, an expert in mortgage-backed securities and mortgage renegotiation, has looked at the data. In a paper soon to be presented, he shows a direct causal link between cheap loans and the rise of the housing market.

Adelino’s research is especially timely as Congress considers how to wind down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the largest mortgage companies in the nation...

...In fact, the timing of the wind-down is one of the key points of disagreement between Republicans and Democrats. House Republicans recently unveiled a package of eight bills that would dissolve Fannie and Freddie over the next two to five years. The Obama administration envisions the process taking up to a decade.

Unfortunately, Adelino says, there will never be a good time to let housing prices drop. “The best case scenario is a gradual removal of the subsidy to try to make it go smoothly and avoid a shock in the market.”

I pointed out in a recent post that the Brookings Papers has become open access.  Common sense suggests that this change should increase readership and thus citations to articles published in the journal.  Indeed, some recent research on law journals confirms this:

Open access legal scholarship – which today appears to account for almost half of the output of law faculties – can expect to receive 50% more citations than non-open access writings of similar age from the same venue.

The bottom line: If a professor is interested in raising his or her citation ranking, he or she should should prefer a journal with open access.

Sure, a ranking like this has lots of problems: apples and oranges (organizational behavior, strategy, org theory journals all in one), the lack of disciplinary journals (for now), etc. It’s certainly not definitive.  But I think a crowdsourced ranking of management journals might nonetheless be quite informative, and it certainly won’t make the mistake of keeping ASQ, Organization Science or Management Science out of the top 5.  Well, we’ll see.

Is there a similar kind of reactivity influencing the kind of scholarship academics do? Do we care so much about which journals are ranked highly that we choose research topics, theories, and methods that would help us get published in those journals? These are questions that came to mind when skimming this interesting exchange in the recent issue of the Academy of Management Learning and Education - the Academy journal that publishes essays about the practices of business education and scholarship. The lead article by Nancy Adler and Anne-Wil Harzing presumes that the current ranking system does not provide incentives to management scholars to do research about “questions that matter most to society.” The leading organizational and management journals (e.g., Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science), they argue, do not promote research that benefits the public good. And because business schools tend to reward scholars for publishing in these journals, our literature lacks the public impact it might otherwise have...

Humboldtian Faculty and Mavens - Santiago Iniguez

When I ask my colleagues about the main challenges our schools face today many point at the attraction, development and retention of good faculty as one of the most serious. Indeed, today schools compete to attract those scholars who combine the best credentials in research with solid teaching skills and who also interface with the top management of respected companies. I have sometimes refer to these well-rounded academics as “kangaroos”, as opposed to “gurus”, because the former are able to jump from research to class to consultancy in large corporations, performing excellently in the three facets.  Let me now further elaborate on this multifaceted type of academics by opposing two models of faculty, which I will name “Humboldtian Faculty” and “Mavens”.

“Humboldtian Faculty” was moulded at the eponymous institution in Berlin in the early Nineteenth Century and has inspired the model of academic prevalent at all Western universities in the past two hundred years. Wilhelm Von Humboldt believed that, in order to make a significant leap in the sciences and in the humanities, the career of academics should become specialised –until then, university professors may teach different discipline- and universities should be organised in schools and departments. A number of consequences for the academic profession followed over the decades and I summarise some of these features in the chart included below.

The Humboldtian Faculty model has rendered many positive results. Knowledge has experienced an unprecedented advance across the board. At the same time, a significant number of education analysts and scholars have warned about some undesirable effects of the model such as the “silos syndrome” derived from an extreme specialisation and lack of integration of both academics, teachings and research at large.

In addition, the demands from stakeholders, the formidable impact of technologies in the learning process and the origination and distribution of knowledge are transforming the role and the ideal profile of scholars. I believe that the concept of “Maven”, widely popularised by Malcolm Gladwell in his book “The Tipping Point”, can adequately illustrate what is expected from business schools’ professors today. Mavens are active gatherers of new trends, ideas and data and have the key skills of identifying which of them may transform the world.

Furthermore, they exercise the necessary influence to have these ideas diffused through other major opinion makers in society –whom Gladwell calls “connectors” and “vendors”.  I include a number of characteristics of faculty as Mavens in the chart below. I hope this idea contributes to a constructive debate on how to better shape the academic profession and adapt it to current changes and demands. I do not believe that I am proposing a revolutionary change, but rather an evolutionary but significant adjustment of the role that faculty play in the modern learning process.

Invest more in research training, say universities

Research training at the doctoral level should be a major focus of European research and development policy in the coming years, the League of European Research Universities (LERU) has said in a statement on doctoral training and the Bologna Process.

'In order to boost this continent's competitiveness and economic strength it is vital to invest in education, and in particular in higher and postgraduate education, since Europe's mostly technologically advanced knowledge economies are now crucially dependent on their ability to push the frontiers of knowledge in order to create a competitive advantage,' LERU writes.

The aim of the Bologna Process is to create a European Higher Education Area by 2010. In its statement, LERU points out that 'the organisation of research and doctoral training in Europe is highly fragmented, with over one thousand universities conferring doctoral degrees'. However, it is concerned that the degree of uniformisation that the Bologna Process has created for Bachelor and Maste r degrees will not be beneficial to research-based PhD training.

'Research-based PhD training, which requires a careful balancing of educational and research perspectives, is fundamentally different from the preceding education cycles,' states the paper. 'It would be unwise to create uniform, top-down, regulatory processes, such as credit ranges for the research-based PhD, or to regulate the status of doctoral candidates as students or employees.'

LERU believes that Europe should promote greater diversity among higher education institutions, under which each institution is encouraged to play to its strengths, be they in carrying out top level research or providing skilled graduates for local industry.

One important aspect of the Bologna process is mobility, and here LERU recommends that Europe support a genuine choice of location and country for the best doctoral candidates and enable 'better knowledge exchange processes between universities and businesses in order to increase the uptake of PhD graduates in the business world'.

The European ministers responsible for higher education will next discuss the Bologna Process at their meeting in London in May.

Three Keys to Success

To close out the series of excerpts from the upcoming book “Inside the Minds: Business School Management,” I thought I would leave my thoughts about the three central keys to success.

1. Put Students First

As the dean of a business school, the most important rule is to always put student welfare first, and always articulate your message as such.

In every strategic step and in the inevitable messages, correspondences, and speeches to students, alumni, and faculty, the dean should put matters in terms of student welfare and student learning experiences. We must always be surveying our students’ needs, and we must modify our programs along those lines. In the best of all worlds, the things you do to meet student needs will also be the things that get you good publicity, but student welfare must be the starting point. In order to build future businesspeople equipped to enter an ever-changing world, it is critical to constantly look at the big issues facing students.

2. Be a “Happy Warrior”

A dean must be enthusiastic and positive, always seeing the good in the whole system and articulating it. You cannot be a downtrodden cynic in this role. You must love the job, love the organization, and show you love it. After all, what could be more satisfying than educating the principled leaders of the future?

In order to achieve success it is necessary to be truly interested in the process of education. While it is true that many skills transfer over from other realms, the skills that make for a great teacher, a great researcher, or a great business person may not ensure success as a dean. Being a business school dean entails working with students, trustees, faculty, staff, alumni and many others, and it is necessary to be able to balance all of these interests at the same time.

3. Treat Faculty as Your Biggest Asset

The strongest force on campus is the gravitational pull between students and faculty. Students want to be guided by their faculty and they want to be respected by them as well – all other student motivations pale by comparisons.  Faculty expertise and teaching skills draw students to campuses more than any other factor, and faculty prestige is a major factor in a student’s school selection. The dean must understand how best to harness the faculty in order to achieve the most positive outcomes. Sometimes the most productive work is thought leadership that is fleshed out through research and then brought into the classroom; in other cases, it may be creating materials and curricula.  The key to deaning is ensuring student learning and the key to student learning is the proper utilization of faculty expertise.

The job of a business school dean is an interesting one with special constituencies and priorities.  In today’s changing world, the job entails grappling with unique challenges as our industry matures and evolves.  However, while the mechanics may vary from other industries, some of the most important ingredients for successful leadership are universal, like vision and attitude.  In this case, that means putting students first, being a happy warrior, and treating your faculty as your most important asset.   Those keys will put any dean on the right path.

The Future of European Universities under Examination

In the paper titled "The Future of European Education: Rennaissance or Decay"", published in June this year, Richard Lambert and Nick Butler argue that "If Europe wants to stop falling behind and stem the ‘brain drain’ across the Atlantic it must act now. It needs to devote more resources to research, improve its teaching record, build up centres of excellence, strengthen links between education and business, and give its universities more autonomy".

Empowering Africa Through eLearning

"Africa and what business schools can do" was a post I wrote on the 30th May. Maybe I have found something that might help? An idea that might take advantage of the increased number of Internet connections that the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) initative will create.

eLearning Africa 2006, with 832 participants from 80 countries, was the first eLearning Africa conference held on May 24 – 26, 2006 in the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was the largest event on educational technologies and development ever to have taken place on the continent.

Is this an opportunity for us business schools - or the private companies out there- to contribute using experience and expertise? Please, this time, add your comments to the blog instead of emailing them.
