Global, inclusive thinkers will shape the future - so how do we shape them?

The economic livelihood of the planet is in turmoil: debt crisis, market instability, double-dip fears. In every government and political institution, across international conglomerates and NGOs, even among the sacred spheres of monetary and fiscal policy - what is absolutely crystal clear is that the old rules have changed. The past is no longer a good predictor of the future.

What‘s needed right now are entrepreneurial leaders who can take creative action in the face of an unknown future to bring real economic and social value to all they do. It is a daunting task for business schools, but we must train and inspire these entrepreneurial leaders to create opportunities, to bravely encounter and learn from obstacles and to incorporate this learning into what they do next. This process ─ of acting, learning, repeating ─ is what managing in uncertain times is all about.

The world needs new entrepreneurial leaders because they cultivate hope and are masters at developing opportunities and creating jobs. And jobs equal peace and prosperity. Entrepreneurship today is all about giving people the tools to make it happen.
Yet, new entrepreneurial leaders will only thrive in an environment that is global and inclusive. We cannot be U.S. centered anymore. Look at any U.S. company and you will see that the majority of sales and most profits are generated from a foreign affiliate: Exxon Mobil, GE, any big company you can think of - where are they hiring? In China, in Brazil, in India.
We tell our MBAs that we want them to be able to go anywhere in the world and succeed. Building a student population that is intentionally diverse is a vital strategy in shaping entrepreneurial leaders. An entrepreneurial leader that is the embodiment of a global, inclusive community will have the best chance of making a real difference in the world.

Black males’ career prospects improve if they are “baby-faced”, according to a recent paper by Professor Robert Livingston, Assistant Professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
 
“My research was inspired by a simple question: why are there still disproportionately less black people in high positions?” says the author.
 
To find an explanation, Livingston looked at how successful black CEOs are perceived by non-black Americans. “The idea was that if we found out what characterizes black people who did manage to get into leadership roles, we could draw conclusions about why they are still under-represented in high positions.”...

For the past five years, women have outnumbered men in worldwide university enrolments and graduation rates. At US medical schools, women comprise half of all students, and women represent nearly 47 per cent of law students.

At business schools in the US, however, women are a minority. The number of men enrolled in MBA programmes in the last academic year totalled 123,385 globally, while the overall number of women was only 69,511, according to AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Olivia Lum of Hyflux named Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011

First woman to win the award in 11th year of the competition

Monte Carlo, 5 June 2011 – Olivia Lum, Group CEO and president of Hyflux Limited, from Singapore, was last night named the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011 at an awards ceremony held in Monte Carlo's Salle des Etoiles. Olivia was picked from among the 49 country finalists vying for the title, each of whom had already been named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year in their home countries. This year saw more female finalists - six in total - than ever before.

Olivia founded Hyflux in 1989 with two staff and start-up capital of $US15,000. Today, Hyflux has become one of the world's leading desalination suppliers. It is publicly traded with revenues of US$450m, employing more than 2,300 people in operations and projects in Southeast Asia, China, India, the Middle East and North Africa.

B-school gender mix changing slowly

After writing a story recently about the growing number of Chinese women interested in getting their MBAs, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at what is happening with female enrollment in U.S. MBA programs. The last time we wrote about the topic was back in 2009, when we highlighted some of the innovative programs business schools were running to attract more women to campus.

In the U.S., the number of women taking the GMAT has risen incrementally for the last decade, according to the Graduate Management Admission Council. There were 50,053 U.S. women who took the GMAT in 2010, a 10 percent increase from a decade ago, GMAC said...

How women fare across different sectors of society

A CENTURY ago, women were scarcely allowed to vote, let alone stand for election. Today women hold seats in parliaments across the world, and in one case are even in a majority. This is one of many achievements that will be celebrated on March 8th 2011, which marks the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. Policies and quotas have helped women in politics and in business. In Norway, women make up nearly 40% of board members of the largest listed companies. Yet on average across Europe they only occupy one in every ten board seats. This may improve, with more women than ever now in the global business-school pipeline. In 2010, nearly 106,000 women sat the GMAT exam, an MBA entrance exam, accounting for over 40% of examinees...
